Southbridge Care Homes proceeds with plans for a new Thunder Bay nursing home

The COVID-19 pandemic slowed preparations for the project

THUNDER BAY — Southbridge Care Homes says it now plans to issue a call for tenders for a new long-term care home in Thunder Bay this fall.

The company has acquired property on Clavet Street between Algoma and Court Streets which was formerly used as the parking lot for the Port Arthur General Hospital site.

Southbridge plans a three-storey, 160-bed facility to replace the 50-year-old, 131-bed Southbridge Lakehead facility on Vickers Street.

The company initially planned to break ground at the new location this spring.

However, spokesperson Candace Chartier says preparations were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chartier previously described the new building as being designed to provide a more comfortable environment for residents, with upgrades such as more expansive common areas, wider hallways, and more intimate dining rooms.

Southbridge also operates Roseview Manor and Southbridge Pinewood nursing homes in Thunder Bay.
