THUNDER BAY — Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement regarding significant rainfall expected in the Thunder Bay area this weekend.

The statement updates the amount of rain the city could receive, saying 20 millimetres to 40 mm are possible by the time the rain tapers to showers on Sunday.

In an interview Thursday, a meteorologist had indicated a total rainfall closer to 15 mm was likely, but cautioned that some forecast models pointed to a chance of much higher amounts.

The rain will be the result of a low pressure system developing over Colorado.

A southeast wind off Lake Superior will help create greater amounts of precipitation.

Environment Canada says it may issue rainfall warnings as the system draws closer to Northwestern Ontario.

Just last weekend, a system that brought 73 mm of rain at Thunder Bay Airport led to numerous rural road washouts and water seepage into basements.
