THUNDER BAY -- St. Ignatius High School fares best among Thunder Bay secondary schools in the annual report card issued by the Vancouver-based think tank the Fraser Institute.
The report is based on a series of academic indicators obtained from the results of annual math and literacy tests given to Grade 9 and 10 students across Ontario.
Three Thunder Bay schools rank in the top half of the provincial rankings, while three others rank in the bottom half.
Out of 735 schools in the province, the Fraser Institute ranks St. Ignatius 164th, based on an overall rating of 7.3 out of 10. The rating happens to be the same as the average rating of 7.3 that St. Ignatius has achieved over the last five years.
Hammarskjold High School receives the second-highest ranking among city schools, 279th in the province based on an overall rating of 6.7 out of 10. That is an improvement from Hammarskjold's five-year average rating of 6.4.
Ratings for other schools include Sir Winston Churchill, 302nd with a rating of 6.6; St. Patrick, 371st with a rating of 6.2; Superior CVI, 420th with a rating of 5.9; and Westgate, 447th with a rating of 5.8.
In a statement, the Fraser Institute says the report card can assist parents in choosing a school for their children, but the decision "should not be made solely on the basis of a single source of information."
