Stars, Walleye earn SIJHL wins

Ashton Sadauskas earned a 46-save shutout to lead Kam River to victory, while the North Stars scored a pair of unanswered goals in the third to double up Fort Frances.

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay North Stars earned their second road win of the weekend on Saturday night, doubling up the Fort Frances Lakers.

Marcellus Francis netted the game-winner with 2:29 to go in regulation and Acoyen Fehr added an empty netter, helping the North Stars pull out a 4-2 win over a Lakers team that led 2-1 in the late stages of the second period.

Thunder Bay’s Beau Helmeczi and Fort Frances’ Nolan Barker traded first-period goals. The Lakers Ben Exell and the North Stars Jarred Feist, did the same in the second.

It was the second straight win for Thunder Bay, who improved to 23-10-3 win the win. The Lakers, mired in fifth place in the Superior International Junior Hockey League standings, slipped to 16-12-6.

Liam Letters earned the win between the pipes for Thunder Bay, good on 36 of 38 shots. His Lakers counterpart, Gunner Paradis, allowed three goals on 45 shots.

The Stars head to Ironwood, Mich. On Friday for games against the Lumberjacks, while the Lakers will travel to Red Lake that night.

Kam River 5, Red Lake 0: Sam Keene made 46 saves to earn his second shutout of the season for the Fighting Walleye, who took three of a possible four points on their weekend road trip.

Jett Mintenko scored twice and added a helper for the Walleye, who host Kenora on Friday night.
