A strange “petroleum-like” odour led to the evacuation of Hammarskjold High School Friday afternoon.
Custodians at the school reported the suspicious scent to administration at around 1:30 p.m. The principal and vice-principals tried to determine the source of the smell but were unsuccessful.
Hammarskjold principal Jenny Lamb says she then contacted Thunder Bay Fire Rescue and Union Gas and had the building evacuated.
“We are only concerned about safety and the welfare of our students and staff and that’s why we’re out here on the street,” Lamb said.
The cause has not been determined but students and staff were allowed to re-enter the building shortly after 3 pm. for a regular dismissal.
A news release issued by the Lakehead Public School Board says an investigation will continue.
