Students demonstrate skills in Far Northern Area Qualifier

Those who win first, second, and third, in each category are eligible to advance to the 2024 Skills Ontario Competition in Toronto

THUNDER BAY – Confederation College was the site of a qualifying competition on Saturday where high school students got to show off their carpentry, culinary, welding, and video production skills while competing for a spot in the provincial finals.

The Far Northern Area Qualifier for the Skills Ontario's 2024 Competition invited 36 high school students from different school boards across the region to participate in the four categories- carpentry, welding, culinary arts, and TV video production.

The students have been practicing their skills since the fall, and Katie Cameron, a Coordinator at Skills Ontario, says this event is an excellent opportunity for students.

“It gives them a chance to hone their skills a little bit working under pressure, which I think is great practice. The winners here will have a gold silver and bronze medallists here regionally and those will go on to compete in Toronto, which can be a very high-pressure situation,” she said.

“But I think most of the students handle it very well and it's really great opportunities for them to go on in the future- and I think just having that on your resume, having competed in a Skills Ontario competition is a really great thing for them.”

Those who win first, second, and third, in each category are eligible to advance to the 2024 Skills Ontario Competition in Toronto on May 6 and 7.
