Stunt driver charged on Dawson Road

Thunder Bay Police nabbed the operator of a vehicle being driven more than 40 km/h over the speed limit

THUNDER BAY— A sticker attached to the tailgate of a pickup truck bore the message "If driven responsibly, please report as stolen."

But an officer with the Thunder Bay Police traffic unit likely was not amused by that notice when he spotted it after directing the driver to pull over on Saturday.

The incident happened on Dawson Road, where police allege the vehicle was being driven at high speed.

"This truck was in fact not being driven responsibly, nor was it stolen," police commented in a social media post.

The driver was charged with speeding and with stunt driving, lost the use of the truck for 14 days, and forfeited his driving privileges for 30 days.

On a road where the posted maximum is less than 80 km/h, speeding at 40 km/h or more over the limit is considered stunt driving.

Police said that on this stretch of Dawson Road, under ideal conditions, at 50km/h a vehicle like this would take about 15 metres to stop, but at 90km/h that distance would increase to about 50 metres.
