Work crews are renovating Thunder Bay's former Oliver Road public school, preparing it for conversion to a home for people recovering from substance abuse disorder.

The Crossroads Centre will relocate to the new site from its current rented space at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital this fall. It will accommodate 40 men and women as they transition to independent living in the community.

Crossroads has been operating in Thunder Bay for more than 40 years. Officials say the current 28-bed facility has a persistent waiting list.

St. Joseph's Care Group is contracted to manage the $2.4 million dollar capital project for Crossroads.

St. Joe's vice-president Scott Potts says the construction project involves "renovating and fitting that [former school] building to suit their business purpose and customize it so it meets their programming needs."

Potts said funding was provided through the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

The project is set for completion by October.
