Supreme Court justices to visit Thunder Bay

Three judges, including Chief Justice Richard Wagner, will spend time in the city this fall

THUNDER BAY — The Supreme Court of Canada is including Thunder Bay in its 150th anniversary commemorations.

The court announced Wednesday that Chief Justice Richard Wagner will visit the city this fall, accompanied by two other members of the court.

Thunder Bay is one of just five cities the SCOC justices will travel to this year.

In a prepared statement, Wagner said one of his priorities as Chief Justice has been to bring the Supreme Court of Canada "closer to the people we serve, because understanding the justice system strengthens public confidence in it."

The court has extended an invitation to Canadians to participate in its various anniversary events.

Its new website, it said, will help facilitate participation

Details about the judges' planned activities are not available yet.

The visit is being organized by SCOC staff with the support of a local organizing committee that includes judges from the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Superior Court of Justice, and representatives of the Faculty of Law at Lakehead University.
