Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Derek Fox is asking chiefs to call for a new executive election, calling allegations that led to his suspension untrue.

Fox posted a statement on his Facebook page on Thursday, providing his first public response since his suspension was announced on Monday.

A brief statement from Nishnawbe Aski Nation announcing the suspension said an internal investigation has been launched into alleged violations of their executive council code of conduct.

"I have been wrongfully and possibly defamed by statements that are untrue," Fox said in the post.

"I’ve asked the NAN Chiefs to call for an election of the entire executive so that a trusted leadership group that can work together is put in place for the benefit of the people we serve."

In the post, Fox said he is proposing that a new election be held within 60 or 90 days.

"The future of NAN is critically important and we can’t be distracted from this. I trust the Chiefs to resolve this," he said.

Fox had been elected as grand chief in 2021, following two terms as a deputy grand chief.
