Sweet G’s Family Restaurant closed for two months

“Becoming the owners of this beloved restaurant, which is the cornerstone of our community, has been an honour and a privilege even if only for a short four weeks. Meeting each and every one of you who have come through our door is the inspiration we will hold onto while persevering through the challenges we face ahead."

THUNDER BAY -- Sweet G’s Family Restaurant has had to temporarily close due to a fire that occurred at the Dawson Road establishment earlier this week.

On Saturday, new owners Don and Carm Kelly posted a Facebook message about the fire.

“Don and I are devastated by the damage that occurred at our restaurant on Thursday night,” the post said.

“A fire investigator suspects a grease fire occurred in the overhead ventilation system where an internal fan may have malfunctioned.”

Although the restaurant received minimal structural damage, the owners have had to close for two months to meet health and safety standards while doing a proper cleanup.

“Becoming the owners of this beloved restaurant, which is the cornerstone of our community, has been an honour and a privilege even if only for a short four weeks. Meeting each and every one of you who have come through our door is the inspiration we will hold onto while persevering through the challenges we face ahead.

“We are committed to getting our community’s precious gem back up and running as soon as we possibly can,” the message said.
