T-Wolves edged in shootout by Gaels

A 2-0 lead on the road wasn't enough to keep the T-Wolves out of the loss column on Friday night.

KINGSTON, Ont. – The Lakehead Thunderwolves will return home to Thunder Bay with three out of a possible four points on the road.

That fourth point was well in their grasp, but the team couldn’t hold on to an early 2-0 lead against the host Queen’s Gaels and fell 3-2 in a shootout.

Daniel Michaud scored the game-winning goal in the penalty shot contest, icing the victory after only Richard Whittaker could find the back of the net on the LU side of the ice.

Liam Whittaker and Nicolas DeGrazia stake the Wolves to a 2-0 lead with goals less than three minutes apart in the opening period.

The Gael’s weren’t about to let LU run away with the game.

Liam Tanner responded just 26 seconds after DeGrazia’s goal to cut Lakehead’s lead to 2-1 and then Samuel Marburg notched his first of the season at 12:19 of the second to knot the score at two goals apiece.

Carson Cherepak made 22 saves in net for Lakehead, while Christian Purboo made good on 33 of the 35 shots he faced.

The loss dropped LU’s record to 2-1-1, leaving them a point behind Brock in second place in the OUA West. Queen’s remained unbeaten, improving to 3-0-0, tops in the OUA East.
