LONDON, Ont. – A late-game flourish earned the Lakehead Thunderwolves a do-or-die Game 3 against the Western Mustangs.
Spencer Blackwell scored with 69 seconds to go in regulation to tie Game 2 at two goals apiece, and with overtime looming, Josh Van Unen found the back of the Western net with 24 seconds to go to give the Thunderwolves an improbable 3-2 triumph.
The win knots the best-of-three series at 1-1, with Game 3 scheduled for London, Ont. on Sunday afternoon.
Dylan Massie opened the scoring for LU with a goal at the 12:56 mark of the third period. The Wolves were trailing 2-0 up until that point.
Zach Power and Jack Sander scored for Western, Power’s goal coming at the midway point of the opening period, Sander’s just 1:40 into the second.
Christian Cicigoi picked up the win for the T-Wolves in net, stopping 19 of 21 Mustangs shots. Matteo Drobac, who got the win in Game 1, took the loss in Game 2, good on 29 of 32 shots he faced.
The winner will play Toronto Metropolitan in the OUA West semifinal.
