THUNDER BAY – They needed a shootout, but the Lakehead Thunderwolves took down the No. 2 men’s hockey team in the nation.
Richard Whittaker scored the lone goal of the penalty-shot competition on Friday night, delivering a 3-2 win over the visiting Concordia Stingers in front of 2,671 fans at Fort William Gardens.
LU scored twice in the first to open a 2-0 lead Justin Paul and Olivier Pouliot finding the back of the net behind Concordia netminder Nikolas Hurubise.
The Stingers bounced back in the second to tie the game, Miakel Huchette potting his eighth of the season at the twp-minute mark and Christopher Inniss evening the score at 13:36.
Christian Cicigoi stopped 29 of 31 shots in regulation and overtime and turned aside shootout chances off the sticks of Blake Richardson, Sean Larochelle and Huchette.
Lakehead (12-7-2) is now tied for second in the OUA West with Windsor and Toronto, and hosts Ottawa on Saturday night. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
