THUNDER BAY – Troy Williams sure knows how to spoil a great goaltending battle.

The veteran Thunderwolves defenceman snapped a 0-0 tie at the 8:36 mark of the third period on Friday night and Max Wright stopped all 24 shots he faced to earn the shutout, as Lakehead started the post-Christmas portion of their schedule with a 3-0 home-ice win over the visiting Queen’s Golden Gaels.

Spencer Blackwell, into the empty net, and Greg Smith 17 seconds later, also scored for Lakehead, who improved to 9-8-1.

Queen’s fell to 11-7-1 with the loss, despite a 51-save performance from goaltender Christian Purboo.

Lakehead hosts RMC at Fort William Gardens on Saturday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
