THUNDER BAY -- The driver of a tanker truck involved in an nighttime crash earlier this month has been charged.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers say they have charged the 22-year-old driver, who allegedly drove his vehicle off the roadway on Feb. 5, with careless driving.

The truck ended up in the ditch embracing the concrete support pillar of the THunder Centre Plaza sign on the east side of Fort William Road.

Police say that the charge of careless driving includes incidents in which the driver falls asleep at the wheel.

Police also say that fatigue is a serious problem for people who need to drive at night for work.

Commercial drivers are strictly regulated in this regard and are closely monitored.
