THUNDER BAY – The city’s Target location will be shuttered at the end of the month.
It has been learned by tbnewswatch that earlier this week Target employees were informed the store in the Intercity Shopping Centre would be permanently closed on April 1.
Target Canada had announced in January that all 133 of its stores would be closed as it exits the market after just two years.
Liquidation sales began in February.
The company’s first three stores to close, one each in Ontario, Quebec and Alberta, shut their doors on Wednesday. Another 13 stores, seven of those in Ontario, are set to close on Sunday.
According to the Target Canada website all operations are expected to be ceased in late May or into June.
When opened in July 2013, the Thunder Bay store was expected to employ about 170 people. The company employed about 17,000 people nationwide.
Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder on Monday confirmed the date of the closure and said the Thunder Bay location will be one of 23 stores across Canada to close on that date.
