TBPA calling for the release of more information by the SIU

Given the SIU’s power to make public statements aimed at securing public confidence, the Thunder Bay Police Association is “strongly encouraging Director Martino to provide further details aimed at ensuring transparency” among community members and “to safeguard trust between police members and the community members we serve.”

THUNDER BAY — The President of the Thunder Bay Police Association issued a statement regarding the current SIU investigation into the death of Jenna Ostberg on Dec. 30.

“The Thunder Bay Police Association is sad to hear about a death in our community. Our hearts go out to the loved ones and those impacted by this tragic death,” Colin Woods said.

“From what we understand, details that show a clearer picture of what happened are being withheld while the investigation is ongoing and will be released with time.”

Ostberg was found deceased on Ray Boulevard after police failed to respond to two 911 calls.

Given the SIU’s power to make public statements that aim to secure public confidence, the Thunder Bay Police Association is “strongly encouraging Director Martino to provide further details aimed at ensuring transparency” among community members and “to safeguard trust between police members and the community members we serve.”

Thunder Bay police members take every call for assistance and their duty to protect the Thunder Bay community with the “utmost diligence and seriousness,” Woods said.

“We will continue to work to build trust with community members while serving our community with diligence, pride, and respect,” he added.

The Thunder Bay Police Association represents 350 sworn and civilian members of the Thunder Bay Police Service who work each day to serve their community.

The family of the deceased woman issued a statement through Nishnawbe Aski Nation, asking for privacy, but also exhibited concerns surrounding her death.

"The family’s fear however, is their daughter is the latest victim of inadequate and unjust policing services received by First Nation women in particular in Thunder Bay. "

Results from the coroner's office are ongoing, as is the investigation from the SIU.
