THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay Police are investigating the death of a woman over the weekend.
This is the same incident that TBPS is being investigated for by the SIU, which occurred on Dec. 30.
When asked for comment on the situation, the SIU replied in an email, stating the investigation is still in its early stages.
"The investigators are conducting interviews with the subject official and other witnesses. Investigators are also gathering any forensic evidence."
The statement continued that the SIU's focus was looking into any criminality involving the Thunder Bay Police Service.
Mandated by the province, the SIU investigates any interaction involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault, or if someone has been shot at, said an SIU spokesperson.
Thunder Bay Police released a statement Thursday regarding their investigation.
It outlined that police had located the body of a deceased 21-year-old woman at a home on Ray Boulevard on Saturday.
Police stated they are "continuing to investigate the death and review the circumstances of the incident."
In regards to the SIU investigation, the police declared their commitment to cooperation with the provincial oversight body, "The Thunder Bay Police Service is co-operating with the Special Investigations Unit as it conducts their investigation."
TBPS noted there will be no further comments relating to this incident, siting the ongoing SIU investigation.
