THUNDER BAY — A Thunder Bay Police Service officer charged with assault while on duty will contest the charges at trial next month.

Const. Andrew Frankow is scheduled to stand trial on charges of assault causing bodily harm starting on Aug. 14, 2023. The trial is scheduled for three days.

The charges relate to an incident on the city’s south side last spring. Officers were called to a transit shelter in front of Thunder Bay City Hall on April 3, 2022 at approximately 4:30 p.m. for reports of an unwanted person.

Frankow, one of the responding officers, had an altercation with an adult male on the scene. As a result, the male sustained injuries and was transported to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for treatment.

The Special Investigations Unit launched an investigation and determined in June 2022 that there was enough evidence to lay a criminal charge against Frankow.

Frankow was suspended by the Thunder Bay Police Service at the start of the SIU investigation and at the time, the service said it would launch a code of conduct investigation at the conclusion of the criminal proceedings.

At the time of the incident, Frankow had been employed with the Thunder Bay Police Service for four years.
