THUNDER BAY — Ontario's Landlord and Tenant Board has ordered a Thunder Bay woman to pay her overdue rent or give up her apartment.

Her landlord applied to have her evicted for non-payment of rent, which totalled just under $10,000 as of the end of December.

The rent for her unit on High Street is about $1,400 a month.

At a hearing last month, the woman requested postponement of her eviction for six months so she could have more time to find another place to stay.

She's lived in the apartment for three years.

At the time of the hearing, the woman was unemployed but said she had a job interview coming up.

However, the OLTB hearing officer said her request for a six-month postponement was prejudicial to the landlord.

"Allowing the tenant to reside in the rental unit for six months with no means to pay the rent that becomes due or the arrears...could result in the arrears increasing to approximately $18,000," he said.

In his decision, he wrote that allowing her until the end of January 2025 was reasonable under the circumstances.

"This would allow [her] to try and source funds to try and pay the landlords back everything they owe, or find alternative accommodations. This delay is not so extensive that it shall severely prejudice the landlord."

By the end of this month, the tenant must remit $11,314 to retain occupancy of the apartment, or she must give up possession.
