Thanksgiving dinners being provided for those in need this long weekend

Many will still need support over the long weekend when it comes to providing food for their families and themselves.

THUNDER BAY — With a long weekend ahead, many will still be needing support when it comes to providing food for their families and themselves.

There will be an opportunity to have a turkey dinner over the weekend from two large community organizations for those who are in need.

On Sunday, from noon to 2 p.m., the Salvation Army will be hosting a turkey dinner courtesy of the Thunder Bay Professional Fire Fighters Association, which will be serving the meals.

The dinner will be held at the Salvation Army's Journey to Life Centre on Cumberland Street. The dinner will be available for "those who are experiencing financial challenges or who are alone at this special time," said executive director Gary Ferguson.

Ferguson said they are able to accommodate upwards of 350 people for their Sunday meal.

It will also be the first time that the Salvation Army will be hosting a Thanksgiving meal in their new building, as previous years' COVID-19 protocols had prevented that.

Iron Range Bus Lines will be offering a shuttle service to bring people to the centre, with pickup locations at both the City Hall and Water St. terminals. The service starts at 11:45 a.m. at City Hall.

On Monday, the Dew Drop Inn is hosting its turkey dinner between noon and 3:30 p.m., which will be available to eat there or take the meal with them. Meals will be handed out

The Regional Food Distribution Association will be cooking and providing 300 meals, with the Dew Drop Inn making another 300-plus meals.

Last year, over 680 dinners were handed out, and they are expecting at least that many people again or more as basic living costs continue to rise alongside inflation.

Currently, the Dew Drop Inn is looking for food donations of mustard, ketchup, baked beans and tomato paste. They also need lots of margarine as they are making up to 400 sandwiches daily for those in need.
