Think of Me campaign reminds you to drive safely

Const. Tom Armstrong from the TBPS traffic unit said people aren't getting the message when it comes to pedestrian safety.

THUNDER BAY - Thunder Bay Police and the Community Traffic Awareness committee launched a new initiative about road safety and pedestrians.

The 'Think of Me' campaign is reminding drivers to think of other non-motorists on the road.

Const. Tom Armstrong from the TBPS traffic unit said people aren't getting the message when it comes to pedestrian safety.

"The first part of this is education. We want drivers to actually take time and remember that there's vulnerable people who also use the road.

"There's a wide range of vulnerable people - pedestrians, cyclists, but the larger focus is on kids. For kids on their way to school it's our responsibility to keep them safe."

In future, TBPS will have printed postcards to give to drivers reminding them to look out for others on the road.

Children in the community were tasked with creating and drawing the postcards, which make the message more personalized for drivers.

During the 10 minute interview, another member of TBPS did traffic enforcement on Junot Ave near the Boys and Girls Club.

That officer stopped five cars during that time.

In the past couple of weeks, there have been two fatal pedestrian incidents. While not involving children, police remain concerned with road safety.

"When you're driving, the responsibility is on you," Armstrong said.

"To keep everybody else safe, we're asking drivers to pay attention, follow the rules, be courteous to others and ensure everybody can make it home safely."
