THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay 50/50 has its first grand prize winner of 2023.
The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation on Friday announced that Margaret Miller was the winner of the January draw, claiming a prize of $654,000.
The foundation said Miller has been buying tickets for more than a year.
"I buy mainly for the hospital. We donate to the hospital every Christmas and when we heard about the 50/50 draw, we went this route too,” Miller said in a statement released by the foundation. “I’m not sure what kind of fun I’ll have with the money, but I’ll try."
The January draw brings the total amount won in prizes through the Thunder Bay 50/50 to $17.5 million.
“The Thunder Bay 50/50 has made a huge difference in the winners’ lives and here at the Hospital,” hospital foundation president and CEO Glenn Craig said in a statement.
“It has allowed us to fund millions more in equipment for the hospital these past few years than we were ever able to in previous years.”
The foundation had said that the proceeds from the January draw would support replacement equipment for one of the hospital's catheterization labs.
