THUNDER BAY -- The city has set a record-high active COVID-19 cases for the ninth time in the past 11 days.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Monday announced 56 new cases, leaving the region with 376 active cases and a seven-day count of 291, or 212 per 100,000, another district record.

All 56 of the cases are considered to reside in Thunder Bay and surrounding area, and the new additions bring the district's total to 1,668 since the pandemic began, more than each of the four Atlantic Canadian provinces and all three territories.

Thirty-one of the cases are considered to be close contact cases, while 13 have an unknown exposure category and 12 are considered to be pending.

There are currently 29 COVID-19 patients hospitalized at Thunder Bay Regional, down from 35 on Saturday, but 10 of them are in intensive care unit, a number that has not changed in two days.
