Thunder Bay Autosport Club races for a good cause

The event was free for spectators, but competitors were asked to get pledges or pay an extra entry fee to participate and raise money for the Northern Cancer Fund.

THUNDER BAY – Local drivers pushed their cars to the limit this afternoon for a good cause.

The Thunder Bay Autosport Club held their 8th annual fundraising race on Sunday to raise money for cancer care in the region.

Held in the parking lot of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, the race brought out the best in all 23 drivers, who were precisely manoeuvring their cars through a sea of cones to get the best time in their class.

We have three classes of cars. We have simply an A class, a B class and a C class,” said Brad Folino, event coordinator. “And what they are is based on categories that are determined in the states by SCCA, the governing body of Motor-sports in America.”

While the event was free for spectators, competitors were asked to get pledges or pay an extra entry fee to participate and Folino said that over the years, the club has raised over 70 thousand dollars for the Northern Cancer Fund.

“Thunder Bay is a car town and a truck town, I must say, there are so many different car groups out there, whether it's Thunder Bay Auto Sport club, Northern Ontario classic cruisers, the car show scene, there's so many of them,” he said.

“And I like to think of it as those of us that get to play with our cars are the privileged few and being the privileged few, I think we have an obligation to help out the underprivileged few in our community that need our help.”
