THUNDER BAY — The City of Thunder Bay is kicking off its Christmas tree chipping program this week.
Residents can drop off their fresh-cut Christmas trees at several locations city-wide for the program.
Once dropped off, the city will collect these trees to be chipped and brought to the compost site at the landfill. When the compost matures in the spring, it will be freely provided to residents to help enrich their flower gardens and lawns.
The program will run from Dec. 26 to Jan. 12.
“An important benefit of a natural Christmas tree is that it’s easy to recycle,” said Jason Sherband, the manager of Solid Waste and Recycling Services.
“There are nine sites across the city where you can drop off your tree, starting Boxing Day.”
The City has split these nine sites between the north and south sides.
North drop-off locations include:
- Brent Park on Balsam Street at Margaret Street
- County Park Tennis Courts on County Boulevard
- Grandview Arena on Madeline Street between Grandview Arena and Westminster United Church (not in the arena parking lot)
- John Jumbo Recreation Centre on Toivo Street
- Strathcona Golf Course at 500 Hodder Avenue
South drop-off locations include:
- Delaney Arena on Legion Track Drive
- Kinsmen Northwood Centre at 609 N James Street
- Westfort Playing Field off of Neebing Avenue
- West Thunder Community Centre at 915 S Edward Street
The City asks residents to remove all ornaments and tinsel from their trees before dropping them off, as well as plastic bags to transport them to the recycling site.
Residents are encouraged not to leave their trees at recycling depots or out for curbside collection.
