THUNDER BAY — The fire department has issued a warning to the public about a possible scam that's been reported in the city.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said Wednesday it's been made aware of what it described as fraudulent phone calls that seek donations for fire prevention.
In one incident, a local organization received a call – which seemed to be a recording – that referred to the importance of smoke alarms and sensors.
Then someone came on the line to ask the person who took the call for a donation, saying the proceeds would be put toward fire prevention activities.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said it does not solicit for donations, nor does it use any type of recorded message informing the public about smoke alarms.
Fire prevention officers and inspectors conduct in-person inspections, and will have clear identification that affirms they are City of Thunder Bay employees.
Anyone who receives a suspicious phone call can make an online report about the incident to the Thunder Bay Police Service.
