Thunder Bay Fire Rescue respond to gas leak

Thunder Bay fire rescue closed off the area to pedestrians and traffic and a nearby building was evacuated and checked for gas build-up on Thursday.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a gas leak on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021.

THUNDER BAY —Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a gas leak at the corner of Bay Street and Secord Street on Thursday.

Upon arrival, fire crews discovered that a gas meter had been knocked off a vacant building in the area by a construction crew working nearby, according to a news release.

The area was sealed off by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue to pedestrians and traffic and a nearby building was evacuated and checked for gas build-up.

No gas was detected in any buildings in the immediate area. The area sealed off was Algoma Street, Bay Street and Secord Street extending back to the Italian Hall on both Secord and Algoma, the release said.

Enbridge gas personnel arrived on scene and also monitored the area for any dangers. The situation was brought under control by Enbridge when they managed to seal the pipe after a short time.

Streets were opened once the situation was deemed safe and once there was no more danger to the public.
