THUNDER BAY — The City of Thunder Bay is receiving $1.6 million in combined federal-provincial infrastructure funding related to COVID-19.

A provincial government announcement Monday said the money comes from a stream set up for a wide range of infrastructure projects that respond to the impact of the pandemic, including retrofits and repairs, active transportation, and disaster mitigation.

City Manger Norm Gale said city officials are still reviewing the particulars.

"We will be making recommendations to Council in the usual way," Gale said in a statement to Tbnewswatch, adding that he was unable to indicate what those recommendations might be.

The announcement from Ontario Infrastructure Minister Laurie Scott said the federal government's criteria for the funding require that all projects be started by Sept. 30, 2021 and be completed by Dec. 31, 2021.

Across Northwestern Ontario, municipalities between White River and Red Lake will also receive money from the same program, based largely on their populations.

Kenora is allocated $228,000, while Dryden and Fort Frances get $184,000 each.

Other towns and townships in the region will receive $100,000 apiece.
