THUNDER BAY — Municipal officials say the Gateway Casino has netted city hall over $2.7 million in the 2024 fiscal year.
In a media release issued on Thursday, the city said the venue “provides entertainment opportunities, and supports local employment while contributing to the local economy.” The payout the city gets is based on casino revenues from slot machines and table games using a formula that’s applied to all gaming sites in the province.
"The funds received from OLG provide additional revenue for the City of Thunder Bay, helping to offset costs and reduce the annual tax levy,” Keri Greaves, the city treasurer and commissioner of corporate services, was quoted as saying in the release.
“This contribution directly supports municipal finances, ultimately lowering the tax burden for residents and businesses."
Gateway Casinos has operated the facility for the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation since 2017. The casino first opened in August 2000.
During that nearly quarter century, the city said the casino has provided more than $55 million to city coffers.
