Thunder Bay Lacrosse League celebrates its players

“I have learned a lot from this program. I think the experience will carry on with me for the rest of my life playing lacrosse," Joel Simerson said.

THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Lacrosse League held its annual showcase game on Monday evening.

Lauryn Graham, director of media and marketing, said the event puts local talent on display for all age groups.

“All the way from under 7 to U20. We like to celebrate the kids who came out for the year.”

The Thunder Bay Lacrosse League has a local league that is more directed towards house league play and is not as competitive. It’s where they teach the basics, she said.

The league also has competitive play and competitive play options outside of Thunder Bay as well for kids who are interested in furthering their lacrosse skills.

The pandemic had quite a large impact on the league, and since then it has been hard for them to rebuild, she said.

“We were kind of on a downward trend, however, we've been rebuilding and this year we've doubled our numbers compared to last year. We would love to do that going forward as well,” Graham said.

She said a few players come in from Nipigon and Red Rock. The league hopes to grow outside of just Thunder Bay.

They are always looking for new faces.

Joel Simerson, a youth lacrosse player, said he has been involved with Thunder Bay Lacrosse for two years.

“It has been the best season ever playing lacrosse this year.

“I have learned a lot from this program. I think the experience will carry on with me for the rest of my life playing lacrosse.

Simerson plans on playing lacrosse for a long time down the road.

“All my experiences with my coaches have been great. They’ve taught me skills like passing, shooting, setting – the basic stuff. But they’ve also taught me a couple high-end tricks, different types of shooting and passing.

In a Facebook post, Alyssa Piccolo, president of Thunder Bay Lacrosse league, said she is overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible support they have received this season.

“We’re proud of each player, new and returning, who gave lacrosse a shot.

“It was incredible to see every player grow and develop within the sport,” she said.

Piccolo said lacrosse is more than just a game – it is a source of joy and growth. The Thunder Bay Lacrosse League’s coaches are excited to support their players along each one’s journey.
