THUNDER BAY — An officer encountered what OPP are describing as a "frightening" situation on Highway 11/17 near Thunder Bay on Tuesday morning.

While patrolling the twinned highway east of the city, the officer spotted a vehicle travelling the wrong way.

The incident occurred at about 4:00 a.m. between the Terry Fox Monument and Hodder Avenue.

According to OPP, when the offending driver was stopped, he told the officer "I'm not driving the wrong way. You are!"

A 22-year-old Thunder Bay resident was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with driving the wrong way on a divided highway.

In a social media post, police appealed to drivers: "If you're tired from driving all day, pull over in a safe location and rest before continuing your travels."
