THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay area's population grew to just over 133,000 last year, according to new estimates by Statistics Canada.

In a report released last week, the federal agency said there were 133,063 people in the Thunder Bay Census Metropolitan Area as of July 1, 2024.

That's an increase of 2,032 from the estimate for July 2023.

According to Statistics Canada data provided to Newswatch, the growth was due mostly to international migration.

People who hold work or study permits, and their families, are included in the estimates.

The Thunder Bay CMA includes the city, Oliver Paipoonge, Shuniah, Fort Wiliam First Nation, Neebing, Conmee, O'Connor and Gillies.

StatsCan has stated that population estimates may differ from official census results, as they are determined by the agency's post-census Demographic Estimates Program, which makes adjustments for incomplete coverage in the census.
