THUNDER BAY — City police have an additional office outside its Balmoral Street headquarters.

Confederation College on Friday announced that the Thunder Bay Police Service will have space inside the college's Shuniah Building, which will also provide a more positive police presence at the college.

The space will be used by police officers to catch up on writing reports, as well as to conduct soft interviews.

Confederation College president Kathleen Lynch said one of the goals for police being on campus will be to allow students to connect with officers, especially international students who are often targeted by fraudsters.

"Not everybody has had the same kind of experiences with their police forces and the places that they come from that we might have had growing up in Canada," Lynch said. "So I think that it's really important that they see that the police are here to help and aren't afraid to approach them if they have some difficulties. So we're, we're really hopeful, that's a byproduct of this partnership."

Having the officers at the school is also hoped to be a benefit for the school's police foundations program, and other security and border patrol courses.

The space is being donated to the police service, which will not incur a cost.

The police service is currently leasing a space at Keefer Terminal to serve as a satellite office for its traffic unit.

The Thunder Bay Police Service has prepared plans for a new policing headquarters, but that project has an estimated price tag north of $50 million.
