THUNDER BAY — City residents are among the most generous people in Canada in terms of support for causes using the GoFundMe platform.

The crowdfunding organization has released a list of the 20 most giving communities in the country, and Thunder Bay is ranked in the top 10.

Its records show that over 7,000 donations were made in Thunder Bay in the first 11 months of 2023, for a per capita participation rate of 6.64 per cent.

That puts the city in 10th spot.

Only one other Ontario city, Brampton (number eight), has donated more often this year on a per capita basis, with the eight other communities in the top 10 all being in British Columbia.

Victoria, BC holds first place.

Founded in 2010 in the U.S., GoFundMe charges a fee of 2.9 per cent, plus 30 cents for each donation, with the proceeds going to its payment processor.

It is a for-profit organization, but says the fees help keep GoFundMe a safe place to contribute.
