THUNDER BAY — Air conditioners were running full-blast Wednesday as the summer's latest heat wave broke a 66-year-old record in Thunder Bay.

The thermometer reached  33.2 C up to 4 p.m., and the humidex climbed to an extremely uncomfortable 40.

Environment Canada says its data shows it was the hottest-ever Aug. 18 at Thunder Bay Airport.

The previous record was set in 1955, when the temperature topped out at just shy of 32 C.

The hot spell will continue Thursday and Friday, with expected highs remaining in the low 30s.

A government meteorologist said there is potential to break the existing Thunder Bay Airport record of 32 C on Friday.

A heat warning remains in effect for much of Northwestern Ontario due to high temperatures and humidity levels.
