THUNDER BAY -- Under a sunny sky, excited children were frolicking in the water Monday at the City of Thunder Bay's third neighbourhood splash pad.

The $450,000 outdoor sprinkler park opened over the weekend adjacent to the North End Community Centre on Huron Avenue.

Residents of the area had hoped the park would be ready for the July 1 weekend, but its opening was delayed while workers continued testing the apparatus.

For Erin Wray, who brought her two children to the splash pad, it appeared the wait was well worthwhile. "This is actually really awesome...It's just a really great location for it," said Wray during an interview at the park.

Wray added that because of the risks of swimming at beaches such as Boulevard Lake, she's glad there's a safer place for her children to cool off. "With Boulevard, you don't know what the swimming conditions are. You don't know if you're going to be getting out with swimmer's itch or what."

Another child at the park on Monday told a reporter she was having a lot of fun and hopes she can come to the splash pad often this summer. "My favourite is going underneath the cloud and getting sprayed," she proclaimed.
