THUNDER BAY – What slow start to the season?
The Lakehead Thunderwolves stormed into Toronto Friday night to take on the Varsity Blues, and skated away with a decisive 6-2 win, their second straight OUA men’s hockey triumph.
Dylan Massie scored twice and Josh Van Unen and Nicholas DeGrazia had a goal and an assist apiece to lead Lakehead to the win.
Olivier Pouliot and Keighan Gerrie also tallied for the Thunderwolves in support of goaltender Christian Cicigoi, who stopped 25 of 27 Varsity Blues shots. Jett Alexander was chased from the Toronto net after Lakehead’s fourth goal, six minutes into the second period.
Nick Gima had a pair for Toronto.
The win pulled LU (3-2-1) within a game of fourth-place Toronto (4-3-0), with a game in hand.
Lakehead and Toronto meet again on Saturday at Varsity Arena.
The Thunderwolves are back at the Gardens next weekend to welcome rival Western. The team will celebrate the five-time Allen Cup-winning Thunder Bay Twins prior to the game on Saturday night, welcoming back team alumni and wearing specially made jerseys honouring the team.
