OTTAWA – At a time of the season when every point matters, the Lakehead Thunderwolves need to pick up the pace.

The Ottawa Gee Gees on Friday night netted the equalizer with a little over eight minutes to go in regulation and Luka Verreault scored the game-winner in overtime, handing LU a 4-3 road loss.

The good news for LU is they did manage to pick up a point and pulled into a seventh-place tie with the Guelph Gryphons, the two teams battling for the last-chance playoff spot, the top five teams making the OUA men’s hockey postseason, the sixth- and seventh-place teams pitted against each other in a play-in game for the final spot.

Ben Badalamenti scored twice for Lakehead and nick De Grazia potted his ninth of the season.

Max Grondin had a pair for Ottawa, with their other goal going to Justin McRae, who tied the game 1-1 just 22 seconds after Badalamenti opened the scoring three minutes into the contest.

Max Wright allowed four goals on 28 shots, while Franky Lapenna stopped 33 of 36 for the Gee Gees to pick up the win.

Lakehead takes on Carleton on Saturday night.
