LONDON, Ont. – The Lakehead Thunderwolves are proving to be road warriors in the OUA postseason.
On the brink of elimination after losing the opener at home in their best-of-three first-round series against the Western Mustangs, the Thunderwolves rallied back with back-to-back matinee wins in London, Ont., taking the series two games to one.
Twice on Sunday Lakehead found itself down a goal, but stayed focus and rattled off four straight goals, including three in the final frame, and pulled out a 5-2 win.
Josh Van Unen, who scored the game-winner 24 hours earlier in LU’s come-from-behind 3-2 win, did it again on Sunday netting the equalizer midway through the second and the series clincher at the 13-minute mark of the third.
Justin Paul and Dylan Massie added insurance goals into the empty net in the final 90 seconds of regulation.
Spencer Blackwell had Lakehead’s other goal, tying the game 1-1 at 6:04 of the second. Lawson Sherk and Zach Power had the Mustangs tallies.
Christian Cicigoi won for the second straight day between the pipes for the Thunderwolves, stopping 23 Mustangs shot. Matteo Drobac was saddled with the loss, making 27 saves on 30 LU shots.
Lakehead advances to the OUA West semifinals and will take on the Toronto Metropolitan Bold in another best-of-three series, which opens on Wednesday night at Fort William Gardens. Game time is 7 p.m.
