Thunderwolves ridden over by Mustangs

THUNDER BAY – The Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball team made a valiant comeback attempt against the visiting Western Mustangs, but in the end, fell 10 points short.

Lakehead outscored the Mustangs 17-9 in the final period, but trailed by 18 after three points and dropped a 66-56 decision, Western improving to 4-4 with the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse victory on Friday night.

Ally Burke led the T-Wolves, as she’s done most nights this season, scoring 17 points, to go with four assists and a pair of rebounds. Rookie Kelly-Ann Coulombe had 13 points and 16 rebounds, the only other Lakehead player to hit double digits.

Paris Alexander and MacKeely Shantz had 16 points apiece to lead the Mustangs offense, Shantz adding nine rebounds and four assists.

With the loss, their third in a row, the Thunderwolves fell to 2-5 on the season. Lakehead hosts Windsor on Saturday night. Game time is 6 p.m.
