WATERLOO, Ont. – The Lakehead Thunderwolves gave the No. 5 Laurier Golden Hawks a double-overtime scare.
The Golden Hawks (12-2) survived, but barely, edging the Thunderwolves 110-109.
Both teams needed late-quarter heroics to keep the game alive.
Laurier’s Deandrae Pierre made a pair of late fourth-quarter free throws that ultimately sent the game to overtime, tied 83-83 and then Lakehead’s Chris Sagl forced double overtime with a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the first overtime period.
The T-Wolves jumped in front two minutes into the second overtime on a Carson Unrau free throw, but Pierre made a layup that gave the Golden Hawks a 104-103 advantage, a lead they’d hold for the remaining 2:39 of the back-and-forth contest.
Down four, Nathan Bilamu made a three-pointer with nine seconds left, but after Pierre turned the ball over with six seconds to play, Bilamu missed a potential game-winning trey and the Golden Hawks survived the scare.
Tyler Sagl led the Thunderwolves with 29 points, while Bilamu and Harold Santacruz each had 23. Unrau came off the bench to score 18, while hauling in a dozen rebounds to complete the double-double.
Pierre had a game-high 31 for Laurier, Taye Donald chipping in 25.
The loss drops Lakehead to 7-9 on the season, good for 11th place in the OUA. The top 12 teams make the playoffs.
Lakehead will host Brock twice next weekend at home.
The Badgers (7-8) were edged 72-70 on Saturday night by the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.
