Transport crashes off Dawson Road into backyard

A witness to the crash says she feared the truck was going to drive right into the house

THUNDER BAY — A transport went off Dawson Road on Sunday morning, coming to rest in a residential backyard.

The incident happened on an area of the road between Hilldale Road and East Avenue

Tara Gauld, who was at her sister’s house on Pine Grove Place, witnessed the incident.

Gauld said she initially heard a loud, scraping noise and wondered if it was a snow plow. She looked out the window and saw the truck break through the fence and come into the backyard.

“I thought the truck was going to drive right in the house,” she said. “I was trying to think in my mind, do we get out of the house?”

The truck came to rest about eight feet from the house, she said, adding the spot where it stopped would have been a patio in the summer.

Gauld said her sister has seen unsafe behaviour on the road and close calls, but nothing like what they witnessed Sunday morning.

She said a neighbour was also quite shaken up by the incident.

The incident happened on a stretch of the road within the city boundaries, with residential neighbourhoods on one side and commercial development on the other side.

Gauld said there are a number of families with young children in the neighbourhood.

“It’s very residential,” she said of the area. “It really was quite dangerous.”

The road was closed Sunday afternoon while the vehicle was removed.
