Trick-or-treaters getting creative this year

Ninja costumes have proven to be among the most popular for kids, who must wear face masks while out collecting goodies this Halloween.

THUNDER BAY – Expect to see a lot of ninjas patrolling the streets on Saturday night.

According to Spirit Halloween’s Sarah Trimble, it appears to be the costume of choice for would-be-trick-or-treaters in 2020, and for good reason.

“Our most popular costume is most definitely would be the ninja because of the flexibility to wear a mask with it,” Trimble said.

“We did have our own face mask to go with costumes that was helpful while they lasted.

COVID-19 means people have to give extra thought to their costumes this year, with public health guidelines suggesting trick-or-treaters and those handing out candy and other goodies on Saturday night wear masks.

They’ve also advised that wearing a mask under a traditional Halloween mask isn’t advisable, as it might make it harder to breathe.

It hasn’t put that much of a damper on plans, Trimble said.

“There are still a lot of really creative people, people who are even trying to take our facemasks and cut the top off to make their own bottom piece, if that makes sense.”

Still, there are plenty of challenges, including how to get treats from house to house, given physical distancing requirements.

Trimble said they have a solution.

“We sell these things called loot scoops. They’re like a long thing with a basket on the end so you can social distance while you’re trick-or-treating,” she said.

“But a lot of people are coming up with their own creative ideas, like chutes with the candy. They’re doing treat bags so it limits the touch on the candy. Everyone’s being creative.”
