Thunder Bay Police called it the largest seizure drug seizure in their history.

On June 22, 2016, they announced they had broken two major drug-trafficking rings, arrested 19 people, and seized marijuana and cocaine with an estimated street value approaching $1.2 million.

Numerous other assets were also recovered, including vehicles, boats and a tractor-trailer, firearms and nearly $140,000 in cash.

In Superior Court on Wednesday two of the suspects received their sentences after pleading guilty to conspiracy to traffic in marijuana.

Matthew Blais, 28, and Michelle Jacqueline Costa, 37, both of Thunder Bay, were each sentenced to 18 months imprisonment to be served in the community.

During the first six months they are subject to house arrest except for purposes of employment. After that, for the year that follows they must abide by a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Other conditions also apply for the entire 18 months of their sentences.

The sentences were recommended jointly by the Crown and the defence. Other charges that were laid against both individuals were withdrawn at the Crown's request.

Court proceedings for other suspects arrested in the bust are incomplete.
