THUNDER BAY — A First Nation west of Thunder Bay and another First Nation east of Thunder Bay are the majority shareholders in the partnership that recently purchased the Victoria Inn.
The acquisition by Naagaaniiyang Limited Partnership was announced last week by the previous owner, Manitoba-based Genesis Hospitality.
Michipicoten First Nation near Wawa, and Naicatchewenin First Nation — 50 kilometres northwest of Fort Frances — are the majority unit holders in the partnership, and there are a number of other investors.
According to information provided by a hospitality management company that's working with the group, the new owners have no immediate plans to renovate the hotel, as improvements were made in 2016.
But Globex Management said "the owners intend to keep the hotel and grounds in good condition," and planning for a future renovation of the 182-room property will get underway in 2024.
It described the Victoria Inn as a cornerstone of Thunder Bay that serves guests from all over Central Canada including from Treaties 3, 5, 9 and Robinson and Williams treaty lands.
The hotel also retains a strong relationship with Fort William Historical Park where it provides catering services for various events.
