THUNDER BAY — The Ministry of Natural Resources discovered two new forest fires in Northwestern Ontario on Sunday, but quickly put one of them out.

Thunder Bay district fire # 19 occurred near the shoreline of Flower Lake, about 27 kilometres southwest of the Highway 17 and Highway 11 junction at Shabaqua.

It was called out at 0.1 hectares in size.

The second fire in the district was listed as not under control at 0.5 hectares.

It was located on the western shore of Lake Nipigon near Caribou Island, about 18 kilometres east of Highway 527.

As of Sunday evening, there were 10 active fires in the Northwest, eight of which were being kept under observation.

The wildland fire hazard is mostly high, but there are isolated pockets of extreme hazard values between Thunder Bay and Quetico Provincial Park, and in the Kenora, Fort Frances and Woodland Caribou Provincial Park areas.
