THUNDER BAY — Two professors from Lakehead University – Lori Chambers and Ruth Beatty – are being honoured by the Royal Society of Canada.
It's a body of distinguished people from all branches of learning who have made exceptional contributions in the arts, the humanities, and the sciences, as well as in Canadian public life.
Lori Chambers, a professor of Gender and Women's Studies at the Thunder Bay campus, was elected as a Fellow of the society for her research.
According to a statement from Lakehead, her work has transformed understandings of the history of Canadian law, especially with regard to women and gender.
Her original and groundbreaking research includes discussions of property law, unwed parenthood, adoption, violence against women, and Indigenous histories in the North.
Chambers has won numerous accolades, including Lakehead's Distinguished Researcher Award, and awards from the Ontario Historical Society and Canadian Journal of Law and Society.
She has also edited four books and published numerous referenced articles and book chapters.
Chambers is currently the president of the Canadian Law and Society Association.
Beatty, an associate professor of Education at LU's Orilllia campus, will be inducted into the RSC's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.
The college recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a high level of achievement at an early stage in their careers.
The university's statement said members represent the emerging generation of Canadian intellectual leadership.
Beatty was selected for the college as a result of her collaborative and community-based research into the connections between Indigenous ways of knowing mathematics and the Western mathematics found in the Ontario curriculum.
The statement said she works with Anishinaabe, Cree and Métis communities to decolonize education by collaboratively designing culturally-responsive math instruction for all students.
Beatty has received numerous awards for this work.
Both women will be officially inducted on Nov. 19.
