THUNDER BAY — A project proposed for a site near the Cherry Ridge neighbourhood in Thunder Bay would see two large apartment buildings constructed side-by-side.
The city's planning services department has received an application for amendments to the official plan and zoning by-law that would clear the way for a pair of eight-storey structures on John Street Road at Chercover Drive.
The property, formerly the site of a U-Haul trailer rental business, is currently zoned for service commercial use.
The developer, a numbered Ontario company, will need to get that changed to residential use.
Shannon Labelle, acting senior planner, told Newswatch she's still reviewing the proponent's submission, but it seems to adhere to applicable policies and regulations that would allow city staff to recommend that it be approved.
Some residents of the neighbourhood have expressed concern about the traffic the development would create.
"We've received some public feedback on this, and there seems to be a general concern related to traffic, and that's extremely understandable," Labelle said.
The city will host a public meeting to consider the zoning request on May 12 at city hall.
Residents may attend in person or watch the proceedings online.
"This is when council will hear administration's recommendation, presentation, comments from the public, as well as from the proponent themselves, ask any questions necessary, and that's when they will make their decision on the application," Labelle said.
